Using e-tools in a face-to-face setting

How technology facilitates students’ active participation in a face-to-face setting

Background

FEX1161 Field Experience I: FE Foundation Course

Topic: Positive Teacher Language & Constructive Feedback

Design target: To facilitate positive communication with students, to seek their opinions and thoughts and to provide constructive feedback for students

👩‍🏫 Fully in-person

⏰ 1 Hour and 50 mins

🎓 30 students

ANALYSIS

Intended learning outcomes:

  1. To understand the positive language use and underlying message to students

  2. To understand the constructive feedback to students

Challenges:

Pedagogy - Students may easily find the traditional lecturing approach boring and lose their attention and learning motivation.

Space - It is difficult to allow all students in a face-to-face setting to share their thoughts at the same time.

CO-DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT

Our solution:

  • Create a virtual learning space using Mentimeter for all students sharing their ideas and thoughts

  • Make use of YouTube video as an illustration of a real-life teaching scenario to inspire student’s thinking on how to appropriately use language and open the floor for sharing

  • Use iPad screen mirroring, allowing the instructor to move away from the lectern and interact with students in the classroom

EVALUATION

Instructor’s reflective comments:

I used Mentimeter in most of my teaching to enhance student engagement in class. All students can participate in class activities, share their opinions, and learn from their peers. Furthermore, Mentimeter enables me to teach interactively, as all student feedback is instantly visible. From their instant responses, I can check their understanding of the topic, interact with the students, and clear up any misunderstandings/misconceptions they may have.

It was my first time teaching at the ePS. The e-pedagogy project team supported my lessons at the ePS by training me on how to use the equipment and providing many instructional design ideas on how to improve student interactions with the appropriate hardware and software.
