Good Practices
Using AI and game-based EdTech tools for efficient teaching and learning

How Artificial Intelligence (AI) & EdTech tools optimise teaching and learning in local school settings

Background

TLS2054 Effective Teaching and Meaningful Learning Using Mobile Technologies

Design target: To improve the effectiveness of learning and meaningful teaching by adaptation of AI and EdTech tools

👩‍🏫 Hybrid

2 hours

🎓 27 students ( 26 onsite students; 1 online student)

ANALYSIS

Intended learning outcomes:

  1. To introduce and explore the features of various assessment tools supported by AI

  2. To apply the assessment tools for auto-grading students’ assignments

  3. To apply and evaluate different EdTech tools to enhance teaching and facilitate learning in primary and secondary school settings

Challenges/Needs:

Technology - It is not easy for the teacher to use their own resource/device for auto-grading students’ assignments; it is challenging for teachers without a background in computer programming to customise a game-based Edtech tool.

Pedagogy - It is difficult for students to visualise and imagine various uses of EdTech tools to design learning activities solely by lectures; students may find traditional lecturing methods boring and lose interest.

Space - The traditional computer lab with fixed furniture does not afford students to move the desks and chairs around for collaborative activities and group discussions.

CO-DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT

Our solution:

  • To redesign the lesson to demonstrate and practice various EdTech Tools with collaborative activities

  • To adopt a future learning space (FLS) with movable furniture for enhancing collaborative activities

EVALUATION

Instructor’s reflective comments:

Introducing AI-grading to students helped them understand how EdTech could help resolve those hazzles on grading. The demonstration of GradeCam (AI grading tool) made them realize AI technology is not something that is remote to their daily teaching and learning needs.  A taste of RPG game making introduction gave them ideas on how they could deliver teaching materials in an interesting way. The RPG game environment could also promote proactive learning as well.
