ECE3261: Parenting in Infancy and Toddlerhood: Theories and Practice
Design target: To enhance students’ understanding of theories and practices of parenting in infancy and toddlerhood through simulated educare practice and collaborative learning
👩🏫 Hybrid
⏰ 1 hour
🎓 32 students (31 onsite students and 1 online student)
ANALYSIS
Intended learning outcomes:
-
To examine the dynamics of interaction with infants and toddlers as caregivers
-
To develop students' capacities through immersing themselves in simulated scenarios to provide quality early experience for infants and toddlers
Challenges/Needs:
Technology - Given the tight teaching schedule, students may not have the opportunity to experience care routines in infancy and toddlerhood in real-life settings. Some students need to participate in the learning activities remotely, so it is challenging for the instructor to manage onsite and online students.
Pedagogy - Students may find it difficult to visualize and imagine parenting in infancy and toddlerhood merely through lectures; students may also easily find the traditional lecturing approach boring and lose their attention.
Space - It is hard for both onsite and online students to collaborate due to the separation of learning spaces.
CO-DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT
Our solution:
Redesign the learning task to extend the learning space and simulate the practical care routines scenarios with the help of technology
-
To create a virtual learning space with the help of Padlet
-
To simulate the real-life care routines scenarios by using Story 360 (e-learning package)
-
To promote collaborative learning by allowing students to discuss the scenarios and work together on other solutions and related theories.

EVALUATION
Instructor’s reflective comments:
The course aims to nurture students’ professional knowledge and skills in providing quality early experiences for infants and toddlers in family settings. The COVID-19 pandemic restricted students from doing on-site visits and familiarizing themselves with working with very young children (birth to age 3) and their families. The development of an e-learning package with the simulation of authentic cases helped students to have an immersive experience of the scenarios from a first-person perspective. Also, the project team helped to design a Padlet reflective task supplementing the e-learning package for students to reflect on what they learned from the package and to ensure the achievement of the intended learning outcomes. The use of Edtech tools and e-pedagogy strongly motivated the students to acquire practical skills and content knowledge.
